About our new release:

In mid 2015 we headed to Kill Room studio in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle to once again work with Ben Jenkins as sound engineer and co-producer. Jenkins recorded our self-titled debut album in 2014. We had a great experience working with Ben and we wanted to delve deeper into our creative relationship, taking advantage of Ben’s perceptive ears and inventive ideas. By design, the Down With Birds songs weren’t fully formed when we initially recorded basic tracks. We had some strong bones but we wanted to give ourselves time to flesh out the arrangements over time in the studio, adding parts and textures to bring the songs to life. We wanted the spirit of adventure and experimentation in the studio to take us to new places- to build trust in each other and throw creative caution to the wind. Compared to our previous album, these songs were written more collectively with all 5 bandmates contributing significantly to each piece. Taking our time also gave us a chance to pull in other talented friends to contribute critical parts to the song arrangements. Jeff Hopper added beautiful keyboard parts to several songs- from piano to synth to electric piano to organ. Our friend Carl Broemel from My Morning Jacket added otherworldly pedal steel guitar to two of the songs (Creature Of Habit and You Old Fool) and fiery, distorted electric guitar on Tijuana Bible. Our bass player, Matt Hopper once again wrote elegant string arrangements for many of the songs too. We’re very proud of the results- a collection of distinct songs that feel like they belong together- drawn from our roots in melodic guitar-based music with psychedelic revelry and orchestral flourishes. The album draws from the past while pushing Something In The Trees into exciting new territory.

About our self-titled release:

The songs on this release all developed differently- some starting with a guitar part others    from a vocal melody, drum beat or bass line. Once the basic seeds were planted the songs  were intuitively developed collectively by the band.

After recording a few demo songs the band struck up a relationship with audio engineer, producer and musician, Ben Jenkins. Ben brought Something In The Trees into his Seattle studio, Kill Room in the summer of 2013 to start the recording process. Ben was invaluable in the studio, not only for his engineering skills but also for his music and production ideas. Ben both supported and challenged the band to push the songs further. For some songs it meant stripping some elements away and for others it meant building more sonic textures with guitars, bass, vocals, found sounds and string arrangements. It was an inspiring experience for all of us. We hope you enjoy the music!
