about something in the trees

Something In The Trees is a Seattle based band- Josh Snider (vocals), Larry Hopper (guitar), Adam Sarton (guitar), Matt Hopper (bass), and Eric Hopper (drums). We make music with wide ranging influences.

Josh and Larry played together for several years in The Tailenders, a Seattle-based Indie band. Adam played guitar in The Infamous Gorpses, a Binghamton, NY-Seattle project. Matt is a classically trained bass player, songwriter and arranger who plays and records with a number of bands and projects from jazz to classical to rock to folk and country. Matt is currently The Seattle Rock Orchestra's principal bass player. He also plays with Trip The Light and PGM Trio. Eric has performed with many bands over the years, including Sony recording artist Old Pike, Neena Foundry, Spicket, Lawn Chair Kings, Camerado and The Warhols. He has created and produced a wide range of original music- ambient, country, folk, electronic and experimental music for film soundtracks, educational videos, gallery spaces and websites. Eric and Matt played together previously in Brown Brothers, The Forty Gallon Baptists and The Mumblers.

Matt, Josh, and Larry met while working at Experience Music Project in 2003. They quickly formed a bond and vowed to play music together someday, but the right project was a long time coming. In 2008, Adam made his way from New York to Seattle where he met Josh and Larry, forging another music connection. When Matt's brother, Eric migrated from New York City in 2011 it proved to be the perfect catalyst- Something In The Trees was born.  What began as an opportunity to hang out, enjoy mutual musical obsessions, share new ones and build some chops on their respective instruments became a torrent of creative synthesis and songwriting.

Something In The Trees play regularly in the Pacific Northwest. We were featured on the first season of TV program, Band In Seattle. Our self-titled debut CD was released in May, 2014. You can purchase the CD, download and stream from this very website! Just click on the "Merch" tab to check it out! We continue to write and record new music. DOWN WITH BIRDS- Official Release Date: March 3, 2017

In mid 2015 we headed to Kill Room studio in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle to once again work with Ben Jenkins as sound engineer and co-producer. Jenkins recorded our self-titled debut album in 2014. We had a great experience working with Ben and we wanted to delve deeper into our creative relationship, taking advantage of Ben’s perceptive ears and inventive ideas. By design, the Down With Birds songs weren’t fully formed when we initially recorded basic tracks. We had some strong bones but we wanted to give ourselves time to flesh out the arrangements over time in the studio, adding parts and textures to bring the songs to life. We wanted the spirit of adventure and experimentation in the studio to take us to new places- to build trust in each other and throw creative caution to the wind. Compared to our previous album, these songs were written more collectively with all 5 bandmates contributing significantly to each piece. Taking our time also gave us a chance to pull in other talented friends to contribute critical parts to the song arrangements. Jeff Hopper added beautiful keyboard parts to several songs- from piano to synth to electric piano to organ. Our friend Carl Broemel from My Morning Jacket added otherworldly pedal steel guitar to two of the songs (Creature Of Habit and You Old Fool) and fiery, distorted electric guitar on Tijuana Bible. Our bass player, Matt Hopper once again wrote elegant string arrangements for many of the songs too. We’re very proud of the results- a collection of distinct songs that feel like they belong together- drawn from our roots in melodic guitar-based music with psychedelic revelry and orchestral flourishes. The album draws from the past while pushing Something In The Trees into exciting new territory.
